When anxiety starts limiting your life

Anxiety can help you recognize a problem and prepare for a challenge. But when worry becomes difficult to put down, it can interfere with sleep, relationships, work, and decisions that matter to you.

You might recognize yourself in some of these experiences:

  • Going over the same decision repeatedly without feeling any more certain.

  • Putting off a task because you’re afraid of getting it wrong.

  • Saying yes to avoid disappointing someone, then feeling overwhelmed or resentful.

  • Trying to anticipate every possible problem before taking a step.

  • Feeling tense or irritable and having trouble explaining why.

  • Staying busy or turning to distractions because quiet time leaves you alone with your worries.

You don’t need to know whether you have an anxiety disorder before reaching out. We can begin with what’s happening and how it’s affecting your life.

Anxiety, perfectionism, and avoidance

Some of the things you do to manage anxiety may help for a moment while making life harder over time. Postponing a difficult conversation brings relief today, but leaves the problem waiting for tomorrow. Checking your work again may feel reassuring, yet make it harder to trust that you’ve done enough.

For many of the men I work with, anxiety is closely tied to responsibility: being a good husband or father, performing well at work, providing for others, or avoiding mistakes. It can be hard to admit you’re struggling when you believe you should be able to handle everything yourself.

In counseling, we can examine those pressures without dismissing the responsibilities that matter to you. We’ll look at where careful preparation helps and where the search for certainty is keeping you from acting.

You can also learn more about my approach to counseling for men.

How I work with anxiety

My approach combines a client-centered relationship with tools from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).

CBT helps us examine the thoughts and behaviors that contribute to anxiety. ACT helps you respond differently to difficult thoughts and feelings while taking action toward what matters to you. Both approaches have research support for treating generalized anxiety.

Depending on your needs, our work may include:

  • Recognizing worry patterns and questioning assumptions that keep you stuck.

  • Practicing ways to respond to tension and emotional overwhelm.

  • Gradually approaching situations you’ve been avoiding.

  • Making decisions without waiting for complete certainty.

  • Setting limits and having conversations you’ve been putting off.

  • Building routines that support rest, attention, and follow-through.

We’ll choose goals together and revisit them as we learn more. If spirituality or faith is important to you, we can include it in our work. That is your choice.

What getting started looks like

You can call or text (281) 516-8529, email joel@joellooney.com, or visit my Contact page. If you’re using insurance, you can check your benefits and book through my Headway profile.

I offer a free 15-minute consultation call. I generally prefer a brief phone conversation so we can discuss what you’re looking for, answer questions, and get a sense of whether we click. Sometimes we arrange the details by email instead.

Before your appointment, I’ll send a welcome email and any remaining intake forms through Headway, which manages billing and electronic records for both insurance and private-pay clients.

At the first session, we’ll review consent forms, discuss relevant information from your intake, and talk about what brought you in and what you hope to change. We’ll begin discussing goals, then refine them as we work together. If another provider would better meet your needs, I can help you explore referral options.

Free resources to explore

These learning modules offer information, reflection questions, and practical exercises you can use on your own or discuss in counseling:

  • Learning to Regulate: Breathing exercises, mindfulness, rest, and routines for managing stress.

  • Passivity to Agency: Understanding avoidance and procrastination, and practicing more direct action.

  • Understanding Emotions: Recognizing and naming feelings when you’re more accustomed to pushing through them.

You can find all eight modules in the Learning & Practices hub. They are educational resources and do not replace individual care.

Questions about anxiety counseling

Do I need a diagnosis to start?

No. You can reach out because you’re worrying more than you want to, avoiding things that matter, or feeling overwhelmed. We’ll discuss your concerns and assess what kind of support makes sense. If you use insurance, a diagnosis may be required for coverage.

Do you only work with men?

No. Men’s mental health is a particular focus of my practice, but I also work with women. We can discuss your needs during the consultation.

Can we meet online?

Yes. I offer online counseling through Headway’s secure telehealth platform. You must be physically located in Texas at the time of your appointment. In-person sessions are available at 26205 Oak Ridge Drive, Suite 106, Spring, TX 77380, in The Woodlands area. See my Contact page for directions and arrival instructions.

What does counseling cost, and do you accept insurance?

My standard private-pay rate is $140 per session. I also accept several insurance plans through Headway. Visit my Services page for current fee information or my Headway profile to check your benefits.
