Counseling for Men in The Woodlands, TX

Anxiety, relationships, and the things you keep putting off

You may be doing well at work while struggling at home. You keep your responsibilities handled, but spend too much time worrying, second-guessing yourself, or trying to keep everyone happy. When someone asks what is wrong, you may not know where to begin.

I’m Joel Looney, a Licensed Professional Counselor. I work with men who want to understand these difficulties and make changes they can sustain. I offer individual counseling in The Woodlands and online for clients in Texas.

Ask about working together

What brings men to counseling?

Some men arrive with a specific problem. Others know they are unhappy but have trouble explaining why. You might recognize yourself in one or more of these experiences:

  • You replay conversations, anticipate problems, or struggle to stop worrying.

  • You say yes to avoid disappointing someone, then become resentful.

  • You postpone decisions or difficult conversations until they become urgent.

  • You become angry or go quiet when an argument escalates.

  • You struggle to name what you feel or ask for what you need.

  • Your days are full of obligations, but you feel disconnected from what you want.

  • You are facing a change in work, family, faith, or your sense of direction.

These difficulties can have different causes. We’ll look at your circumstances and history rather than assume that every man has the same problem or needs the same solution.

What we would work on

We begin with what is happening now: what brought you in, where you feel stuck, and what you hope will change. We’ll also consider the habits and expectations you learned in your family, relationships, and work.

You may need to practice making a decision without certainty, expressing a need without apologizing for it, or hearing a complaint without immediately defending yourself. You may need to grieve a loss, reconsider an obligation, or recognize that a situation is asking more of you than you can give.

My approach draws on cognitive behavioral, acceptance-based, and relational approaches, along with questions of meaning and purpose. We’ll use reflection and practical exercises where they help. The work should connect to your actual life: a conversation you have differently, a choice you make, or a habit you begin to change.

When the difficulty is in your relationship

You can work on relationship concerns in individual counseling. We can examine how you respond to disagreement, what you have left unsaid, and how to take responsibility without accepting blame for everything.

Neither person in a marriage should have control over the other, but both should have influence. That influence should go both ways.

I offer individual counseling rather than couples counseling. Our focus is your experience, choices, and behavior. If you need couples work, we can discuss finding an appropriate provider. If there is fear, coercion, or abuse, we’ll consider safety and support rather than treat it as an ordinary communication problem.

You do not need to know exactly what to say

“I don’t know how to explain it” is a reasonable place to start. You can describe a recent argument, a difficult workday, or something you keep avoiding. I’ll ask questions and help you sort through it.

You do not have to share everything at the first appointment. We’ll discuss what you want help with and whether working together seems like a good fit.

About Joel

I earned my master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Sam Houston State University in 2012 and spent eight years working as a therapist in the Texas prison system. I opened Joel Looney Counseling in 2021. Much of my work has been with men facing anxiety, shame, difficult relationships, and decisions they struggle to make.

I also have a pastoral background. Faith and spiritual questions can be part of counseling if you want them to be. They are optional; you do not need to share my beliefs to work with me.

Free resources to explore

If you want to begin with a specific topic, these free modules include explanations, reflection questions, and exercises:

  • Beyond the Nice Guy: Recognize people-pleasing, unspoken expectations, and resentment. Practice a clear request or limit.

  • From Passivity to Agency: Understand how you avoid decisions and take one practical step on something you have postponed.

  • Understanding Emotions: Use an interactive emotion wheel to find words for what you feel and explain what you need.

  • Communicating Through Conflict: Recognize destructive habits, take breaks with a return plan, and practice listening and repair.

You can use these on your own or bring your reflections to counseling. They offer education and practice; they do not diagnose you or replace individual care.
